2008 Calendar of Events
Saturday July 12, 9am to noon: Celebrate “Pulling for Colorado” and Colorado Weed Awareness Day. Join us for activities at the Red Feather Lakes Library and the US Forest Service Work Center on Dowdy Road, in Red Feather Lakes. Participate in weed identification, weed tours and receive educational information. Tim D’Amato, Larimer County Land Stewardship Manager will speak about noxious weeds in Larimer County. The Wacky Weeders, a group of local volunteers who participate in controlling weeds around Dowdy Lake will be handing out information and encouraging visitors to “Pull One for Colorado”. There will be games for children, giveaways and prizes. This event is co-sponsored by the North Fork Weed Coop, Larimer County Department of Nature Resources, and the Canyon Lakes Ranger District of the Arapaho/Roosevelt National Forest. Saturday July 19th, 9am to noon: The North Fork Weed Coop, Larimer County Natural Resources, and the CSU Weed Science Program are hosting a Weed Tour on July 19th. Meet at ARDEC, the CSU Agricultural Research, Development and Education Center (4616 NE Frontage Rd, Fort Collins) at 9am for introduction and background by Tim D’Amato of Larimer County Natural Resources and Dr. Phil Westra, Professor in the Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management, at CSU. We will tour experimental plots at the CSU Horticultural Farm, where participants will learn about new methods of weed control focused on minimizing impacts on desirable species. The final stop will be test plots for controlling Canada thistle near Cobb Lake. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about collaborative efforts for controlling weeds on a local level, and to provide input on research priorities and long term needs.
