Pulling for Colorado

‘Pulling for Colorado’ (P4C) is a statewide effort to educate Coloradoans about the impacts noxious weeds are having on our natural, agricultural and recreational lands.  Events such as weed pulls and educational booths are scheduled statewide to occur around ‘Pulling for Colorado Day’ on Saturday July 10.  Funding for the events is provided by the Colorado Department of Agriculture, and allocated through a small grant program by the Colorado Weed Management Association.  The North Fork Weed Coop has been awarded a grant to support an educational booth that will be disseminating information on noxious weeds in Larimer County.  The booth will be staffed by NFWC members and handing out educational brochures and T-shirts at the Red Mountain Open Space trailhead-parking lot Saturday July 10, 2010.  Please stop by and visit with the weed ‘experts’ before hiking the beautiful Red Mountain Open Space trails.

Spotted Knapweed Management Cost Share Program

The Larimer County Weed District has been awarded a grant from Colorado Department of Agriculture to control spotted knapweed infestations in northern Larimer County.  The grant will support a cost share program reimbursing private landowners 50% of the cost of labor and herbicides used to control knapweed.  Landowners wishing to participate in the program first need to contact the Weed District office at 970-498-5768 to schedule a site visit.  Once verification of the weed species and management recommendations are agreed upon, landowners can either apply herbicide themselves or hire an applicator to do so.  On completion the landowner then submits a copy of the herbicide and/or labor invoice to the Weed District office for reimbursement.

Spotted knapweed and a closely related species, diffuse knapweed, are not common in Larimer County.  Most infestations occur along the Highway 287 corridor, Red Feather Road and Poudre Canyon.  Lacking the underground root systems of Canada thistle and leafy spurge, spotted knapweed reproduces only by seed.  Aggressive weed management efforts could eliminate or at least minimize this noxious weed species in our area before widespread environmental and economic impacts take hold.  Spotted knapweed infests many millions of acres in Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington and southern Canada, significantly decreasing livestock production and wildlife carrying capacity. Please help prevent this invasive plant from taking hold here.
