North Fork Weed Cooperative

Coop Partnership

Welcome to the North Fork Weed Cooperative (NFWC)

In the Spring of 1999 a group of local landowners came together with a common interest to improve our ability to prevent, control and manage harmful invasive weeds on private and public lands in our watershed. We felt the best way to approach the widespread problem of weed infestations was through a unified effort by those who have a vested interest in the land.

In October 1998, The Nature Conservancy and The Colorado Division of Wildlife hosted a meeting in Fort Collins to bring together state and local agencies, private organizations and individuals to define the elements we would need to address our invasive weed problem. Participants drafted a framework which incorporated several key aspects; including educating ourselves and our neighbors about control and prevention, learning to inventory and monitor individual sites and ultimately to create a weed management cooperative.

In the summer of 1999 another meeting was held at the Livermore Community Hall. Twenty community members attended including private property owners, Colorado Division of Wildlife, US Forest Service, Colorado Lien and area ranchers. Members present recognized the importance a cooperative effort would have in the successful control of weeds and committed to working together, sharing resources, and strategically planning for a unified weed management program.

In December, 2000 NFWC members elected to begin to create a greater structure for the cooperative as an organization. Since then a Council of five-members was formed and a constitution and bylaws adopted. The primary duties of the Council are to act as a decision-making entity, strategic planning and promotion of the NFWC within the community.
